Ambergris Caye

Do you need a golf cart in San Pedro?

It depends on where you stay. In town, no: rent one for a day to see the island. North of the bridge, yes: most guests keep one for their whole stay.

Updated October 2026

Ambergris Caye is about 25 miles long. San Pedro is its only town, and hotels spread from 14 miles north of town to 5 miles south. Hotel addresses tell you where you are: “5.5 miles north” means 5.5 miles from the town center. Check yours before you decide.

Where you stayDo you need a cart?
In townNo. Walk, and rent one for a day to explore.
Up to about 3 miles southHelpful. Many people bike, but a cart makes dinners in town easy.
Just north of the bridgeYes, for most of your stay.
5 or more miles northYes, for your whole stay. Expect bumpy roads.

Staying in town

Restaurants, bars, shops, dive shops and the water taxi docks are all within walking distance. Tour boats pick up from the docks in town. Parking a cart near Front Street can be a hassle at busy times. Rent one for a day if you want to drive to Secret Beach or the far south end.

Staying south of town

The roads south of town are paved and there are plenty of places to eat along the way. Many hotels lend bikes. A cart is still the easy choice for families or if you plan to go into town every evening.

Staying north of the bridge

A bridge over the river connects the north of the island to town. New resorts like Alaia and Reef Haven are on this side, along with older ones further up the coast. Walking to town isn't practical from most of them, and taxis add up over a week. Roads get rougher the further north you go, so a sturdy cart matters. Your rental should include the bridge pass.

The other ways to get around

  • Walking: fine in town. The beach path and Front Street link most of the center.
  • Bikes: many hotels lend them, and some shops rent e-bikes. Good for flat, short trips.
  • Taxis: wait in town and near the airstrip, and your hotel can call one. There is no Uber or Lyft in Belize.

If you decide to rent

Most companies charge $35 a day or $175 a week for a 4 seat cart, and many deliver free to your hotel. Book early for Christmas, late January to March, and Easter. Compare every company on the San Pedro golf cart rental page.
